SOYAR movement donates to elderly in Saddlers

Mr. Pollock

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - SOYAR, the ‘Save Our Youths At Risk’ movement based in Saddlers Village, continues to be a positive light in its community as the non-governmental organisation recently made contributions to a number of elderly persons in their village.

According to Alicia Collins, the person who established the group, on January 13 her movement made food basket donations to 20 elderly persons living in the Saddlers community including six from the Saddlers Elderly Home.

“We are a youth group but we are of the knowledge that we are here today because of a past generation; so as we acknowledge our youth we are still remembering where we came from and our elderly,” she said.

Collins said that one of the persons who received a food basket is a fife player popularly known as Mr. Pollock.

She said they had a great time visiting with the senior citizens and that Pollock played some gospel music on his fife for them.

The group is hoping to organise a number of events geared towards helping youths throughout the year.

She noted that one of their main goals is to refurbish the Saddlers Primary School’s kitchen so that they could re-introduce Home Economics.

Collins said the group is pro-education and would like to introduce initiatives where persons in the community could learn various trades.

She stressed that the issue of crime and violence not only affect the Saddlers community but also the Federation and that community unity could help in creating behavioural change.

“If members of different communities are united a lot of the social ills can be curbed and prevented because unity is strength. We have to encourage groups to be a part of positive initiatives for this year and moving forward…and also to hoping to encourage adults to lend their support in every aspect,” she said
