BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – DEVON MORTON of Upper Monkey Hill, St. Peters died this morning (Jan. 25) at the JNF Hospital, some 15 days after he was shot by masked gunmen in Mc Knight, making him the Federation’s first murder victim for the year.

Reports reaching SKNVibes state that Morton (28) died at about 5:45 a.m. and this which was confirmed by Assistant Commissioner of Police with responsibility for Crime, Ian Queeley.

Morton and popular businessman Ashley Allers of Fortlands were shot on the night of Monday (Jan. 10) while at a club on Lower Cunningham Street near to Fort Thomas Road in Mc Knight. Allers is said to be the proprietor of the club.

On arrival at the scene, this media house learnt that while the two men were inside the club, two masked gunmen approached and opened fire, hitting Ashley in the shoulder and Morton to the chest, abdomen, thigh and hand.

The two men were transported in Allers’ vehicle to the JNF Hospital, where it was learnt that the businessman was in stable condition but Morton’s was considered very serious.

According to one resident of the area, it is believed that the intended target was an individual who normally performs security duties at the club, but they were unsuccessful in their attempt to shoot him and randomly fired at the building.

Head of the Criminal Investigation Department, Inspector Franklyn Belgrove had told SKNVibes that police had received a report of the shooting incident at approximately 10:25 p.m. but on arrival the gunmen had already fled the scene.

Inspector Belgrove also informed that a number of items of evidential value found inside and outside the club were in police custody for further analysis. He noted that no suspects were in custody but investigations were ongoing.

After Belgrove and members of the investigation team had departed the scene, an examination by this media house revealed that more than 10 spent shells were retrieved by the officers, while some four pock marks were visible on the door and outer wall of the club, which is the second building south of the McKnight Medical Centre.

To date, no one was arrested and charged for the incident.
