COLOMBO Sri Lanka, January 31st 2011 – Adrian Barath made his maiden One-Day century as the West Indies made 245-5 off their 50 overs, batting first in the 1st ERI One-Day International against Sri Lanka on Monday.

After the Windies batted there was a heavy downpour and washed out the rest of the match before the Sri Lankans could start their reply.

The 20-year-old Barath, in just his sixth ODI innings, made 113 off 129 balls with eight fours and two sixes on a good batting pitch at the Sinhalese Sports Club. The two sixes went high over mid-wicket as he dominated the bowling. His 50- came off 70 balls and the second 50 required just 49 more balls as he played shots to all parts of the ground. The knock more than doubled his previous best score of 50 made against Zimbabwe in Guyana last March.

Ramnaresh Sarwan made a brilliant 75 from 100 balls on his return to the team, with four boundaries and a massive straight six off spinner Ajantha Mendis which smashed into the sightscreen. He added a third-wicket stand of 165 off just 184 balls with Barath.

Both Barath and Sarwan in the in the first over of the batting powerplay – caught at long-on off Lasith Malinga, who took 3-51 from his 10 overs. After that skipper Darren Sammy came in and hit a big six over square-leg to end on 21 not out off 15 balls.

The second ODI will be played on Thursday at the same venue. First ball is 9.30 am (12 midnight Eastern Caribbean Time/11 pm Wednesday Jamaica Time).
