Thief breaks into Cayon Street barbershop

Edson Roberts - Proprietor of Superior Cut Barbershop

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – POLICE are investigating a break-in at a popular barbershop in Basseterre that occurred between late Saturday night (Jan. 29) and early Sunday morning (Jan. 30).

According to Edson Roberts, owner of Superior Cut Barbershop on Cayon Street, he was dismayed to find that his shop was broken into and a number of items used to ply his trade were missing.

The New Road resident said that on Saturday evening he had closed for business and secured the premises between 10:45 and 11:00, but on return the following morning at about 9:30 he found the barbershop broken into and missing were a 32-inch Sharp flat screen television set, a Sony Entertainment system and six hair clippers.

“After I entered the barbershop, the first thing I noticed was that the TV was missing. On further checking, I found that six of my hair clippers were also missing. I was dismayed and still am over the loss, so I decided to check the entire shop to find out how the thief or thieves entered the building,” Roberts said.

Roberts noted that on checking in the bathroom, which is to the rear of the building, he found that the window was broken and “I guess that is how the thief or thieves got into the shop. However, they exited through the eastern side door after screwing off the deadbolt and they left pieces of the lock on the steps”.

“I had bought the TV to entertain my customers while they sit and wait for their haircut. Now, not only am I left with the expense of replacing it, but I also have to get a new set of clippers to ply my trade,” he added.

Roberts said he found it hard to believe that someone would be so daring to break into his barbershop, knowing that it is so close to the Basseterre Police Station.

“I can’t believe that someone would do that when it is known that the police station is just next door to my barbershop. Why don’t they look for gainful employment instead of robbing people of their hard earned property? This is heartrending! I started cutting hair professionally in 1998, and since then I have been self-employed. It had taken much sacrifice to get myself established and it seems as though some people are bent on making other people’s lives miserable. However, I am young and with the help of God I know that I will overcome this setback in my life,” he said.

Roberts told this media house that he has no suspect in mind but the matter was reported to the police.
