CHARLESTOWN Nevis, February 2nd 2011 - The Nevis Cricket Association’s executive and management team met at the Elquemedo Willet Park late yesterday evening and the main agenda item was the final preparations for the opening of the 2011 local cricket league.
It is now finalized that the opening ceremony for this year’s league will be held on the afternoon of Thursday 10th February at four pm. The ceremony will be held at the Ramsbury grounds and will feature addresses by President Ronald Powell, Sponsors of the various tournaments and the Hon Hensley Daniel, Minister of Sports, who will also officially declare the league open.
Immediately following the opening ceremony, a match will be played which is expected to generate quite a bit of excitement. The Nevis Cricket Association’s X1 will engage a strong Nevis under 19 team in a fifteen overs match up.
National Coach Stuart Williams is expected to release the under 19 team shortly but the Association has taken the bold initiative to announce its team.
Ronald Powell capt; Elvis Clarke; Wendell Wallace; Stascius Wallace; Dexter Boncamper; Donovan Matthews; Dwayne Warner; Curtis Morton; Merlin Liburd; Joel Simmonds; Lavern Lawrence and Kelvin Archibald.
Another decision made was a change to the bonus point’s initiative being introduced for the first division teams for this year. Instead of the original five points which was announced earlier, the bonus points will now be 2 points for teams scoring over 300 runs in an innings or bowling out the opposition for less than 100 runs.
The matter of the grass roots program grant being offered by the WICB also came up for discussion and President Ronald Powell has committed to getting all of the necessary information about qualification of teams/clubs for such a grant. The general body however agreed that this is as good a time as any for teams on Nevis to fully establish themselves into properly organized clubs.
Meantime, the Nevis Cricket Association is soliciting the continued support of the general public in its quest to take Cricket on Nevis to another level this year.
