CHARLESTOWN Nevis, February 3rd 2011 - History was created yesterday at the Jocelyn Liburd Primary School when the Kindergarten to Grade two GIRLS cross country was held for the very first time.
According to successful Coach from last year’s inter primary meet, Kurvin Wallace, the initiative was put in place this year due to the fact that at the Inter Primary level, locally dubbed ‘the mini Olympics’, the students in these classes are grouped to compete against each other, so the JLP students were simply stepping up to the plate to prepare for such an eventuality.
The race started in the general vicinity of the Gingerland Secondary school just after 2 pm and the large group of athletes headed Eastwards towards the popular ‘Brino’s shop’, located at Hull Ground. Here they made a U-turn and raced back to the school at a very fast clip.
When the dust settled Niyanza Kelly of grade two was the definite clear cut winner and effectively found a permanent place in the history books of the JLP School, as the first winner of such a race.
She was followed by another Grade two student in the impressive Alesha Kelly. However, receiving an extra warm hand in third place was a student from Kindergarten, Devery Lewis.
The top ten placers were:
Shai- Ann Tyson
Riancia Maynard and Leniqua Dyer tied in 8th spot
A similar event for the boys from the same grades will be run today at 2pm.
