By: Rawle Nelson, SKNVibes

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – PUBLIC RELATIONS OFFICER (PRO) of the St. Kitts and Nevis Amateur Athletic Association (SKNAAA) Evris Huggins has extended congratulations to a number of local athletes for their good performance in a number of international development meets held recently in Europe and the USA.

Huggins noted that the recent performance is an indication that athletics in the Federation is on a continued upward trend. He said that as the season continues to grow the local athletes would continue to demonstrate their ability and high performance.

“I believe that this will be a very good season for athletes from St. Kitts and Nevis and, therefore, I want to congratulate them on behalf of the association how proud we are over their performance,” he said.

The PRO stressed that the local association would also be having a busy year in which they are hoping to achieve a number of things.

Commenting on the results over the weekend in Europe and the USA, Huggins informed that local track star Kim Collins placed fourth at the Avia International meet in Europe.

Collins clocked 21.69 seconds in the Men 200m which was won by Germanys’ Sebastian Ernst who registered a time of 21.21 seconds. Second and third places were occupied by Ryan Bailey of the USA with 21.24 seconds and Danny Talbot of Great Britain with 21.39 seconds.

In the 200 meters women version, the Federation captured an identical position through the efforts of Virgil Hodge. Hodge’s time was 24.89 seconds and, like the male 200m, her race was won by German in Cathleen Tschirch who made it in 23.86 seconds. Great Britain’s Joice Maduaka and USA’s Connie Moore with times off 24.17 and 24.34 seconds took the second and third spots respectively.

Meanwhile, at the Houston Indoor Invitational and Multi’s meet, the Federation’s athletes turned in similar performances through Antoine Adams with 6.98 seconds and Robert Morton with 7.14 seconds in the 60m race.

However, in the 200m finals, Adams turned in a blistering performance to capture second with a time of 22.16 seconds. The race was won by Shannon Grover in 22.04 seconds while Morton placed seventh with a time of 22.37 seconds.

At the 2011 Concordia Classic, Lawrence Brijesh clocked 6.81 seconds in the 60m race and Marecia Pemberton, representing Florida State at the Razorback Invitational, placed sixth in a 60m preliminary race in 7.44 seconds and fifth in the finals with 7.47 seconds.

Huggins stressed that this year the SKNAAA intends to aggressively pursue a number of initiatives and they would continue to assist in the development of local athletes.

He described the athletes’ performance over the weekend as satisfactory and hopes they would get better.

“We continue to see improved performances from some of our athletes and I am confident that they will continue, especially among the young athletes,” Huggins added.
