SKABA Press Release

SKABA Basketball Digest, Sunday, February 6, 2011 - Kenroy Tobias, Dr Garfeild Alexander and Lawyer Jonel Powell are some of the names that have been elected to serve on the SKABA executive over the next 2 years.

Over 50 persons representing more than 20 clubs travelled to the Football House SKNFA Headquarters to attend the St.Kitts Amateur Basketball Association Annual General Meeting. The much anticipated AGM drew much attention particularly in recent weeks as many persons came forward and showed their interest in leading the August Body over the next 2 years. The meetings agenda included the Presidents Report and a Treasurers Report as well as a matter involving a player who was suspended by the Association. The body voted to have the situation with the player , traversed to and be dealt with by the incoming executive. The meeting was very exciting and intense as team representatives gave their views on the present status of basketball and their feeling regarding its future. After all the heated discussion and debates subsided the SKABA began the process of selecting a new executive. And that they did as a brand new executive was elected.

The clubs made 4 nominations for the post of President in the persons of Wendell Pemberton, Kenroy Romel Tobias, Dr. Garfield Alexander and Juslyn Daniel. After each candidate gave their presentations to the clubs Mr. Kenroy Tobias was elected President with 16 of a possible 46 votes followed by Dr. Garfield Alexander, Wendell Pemberton and Juslyn Daniel. This was Tobias’; first time contesting for the position. It was also a maiden run for the Presidency for Dr. Alexander. This is the 2nd year in a row that Wendell Pemberton has lost in his bid to become SKABA Chief.  Daniel has served as President on multiple occasions and may be only exceeded by SKABA Administrative legend James Barman Hanley in terms of years served on a SKABA executive.

Dr. Garfield Alexander was declared Vice president as he ran unopposed. Kristin Greaux was declared General Secretary after edging former assistant General Secretary Vanessa Parris in the voting. Lawyer Jonel Powell was elected unopposed as Treasurer while Suelika Creque comfortably defeated Justin Moses for the post of Public Relations Officer. The other elected members of the new executive are Dwayne Sturge who was unopposed for the position of Assistant General Secretary and Dave Debeson was elected Assistant Treasurer.

Kenroy Tobias gave his first official presentation as the new SKABA Chief and pledged his continued unwavering commitment to the development of basketball. Outgoing Executive members James Hanley, Juslyn, Wallis Wilkin as well as Games Commissioner Vanessa Parris all gave their endorsement and full support to the new executive.

“I must admit that I am thoroughly satisfied with this new team, said outgoing General Secretary Wallis Wilkin. “The executive is comprised of professionals from varying fields who will all have to exercise their expertise in the administration of basketball. There is a medical doctor in Garfeild Alexander who may have to spear head some sort of insurance programme for players, Lawyer Jonel Powell who will o doubt have to lead the review of the SKABA constitution which needs a lot of work . An Architect in Dwayne Sturge who will likely have to apply his skills in the ensuring that the upcoming indoor facility satisfies the needs of SKABA as well as Suelika Creque whose writing and media skills will have to play a major role in enhancing the image of SKABA,” Wilkin continued.

Wilkin went on to state , “I must say that SKABA will be in good hands with Kenroy Tobias and his team and I am excited about the future of SKABA under this new executive.”
