BASSETERRE St. Kitts, February 04, 2011 (SKNIS) - Thirty six Grade 2 students from the Tyrell Williams Primary School in Old Road visited Government Headquarters on Friday as part of their Social Studies assignment and were recognized with a special treat.
Minister of Youth Empowerment and Information Technology Honourable Glenn Phillip received the students at his office and expressed his pleasure at being able to interact with them while they toured the Federal building. He referred to his own youth and noted that today’s generation faces numerous opportunities and challenges.
“There are a lot of [negative] influences that are out there like drugs, and guns, and violence. These are things that you will have to stay away from in your life,” he told the students. “… When I was growing up, I didn’t have a TV, I basically had a radio and that was it. Now you have the internet, you have the TV, you have all sorts of devices that can … distract from your everyday life within school and so you have to stay focused.”
The Minister, who is also the elected representative for Constituency #4, which includes Old Road, answered the call of Principal Terrence Edwards by presenting a laptop to operate the white board in the school’s computer lab. Minister Phillip added that since he became a member of the Cabinet, the outfitting of the school with technology-based tools was a priority, and he was pleased to once again facilitate this promise.
The learning resource was donated by the Government of St. Kitts and Nevis and the IT Minister emphasized that Government is keen on continuing its efforts to upgrade the learning experience in schools throughout the Federation.
Principal Edwards informed SKNIS that he was grateful to the Minister for fulfilling the request for a laptop to the school that was made over the Christmas holiday.
“Thank you so much. This computer will go a long way in helping the children at the Tyrell Williams Primary School,” expressed Principal Edwards, as he highlighted the evolving curriculum based teaching currently taking place. He pledged to make good use of the donation.
