BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – POPULAR local calypsonian Dion ‘Ayatollah’ Stevens appeared in the Basseterre High Court before His Lordship Justice Errol Thomas on Thursday (Feb. 3) and pleaded guilty to the charges of building breaking and larceny.

Stevens, who pleaded guilty to both charges on his first appearance in court on January, 18, 2011, had changed his plea on Thursday after the Director of Public Prosecutions, Paulina Hendrickson, made an application for the indictment to be amended and the charges again read to him.

Justice Thomas told the self-represented calypsonian, who was on bail, that he would be detained in custody pending his sentencing hearing on Thursday, February 17, 2011.

Stevens was convicted for breaking into Kimberly Gumbs’ S&M Snackette on June 23, 2010 and stealing a red Tropical Delight juice, one pair of ladies ‘slappers’, EC$46 and assorted food to the value of EC$66. The Snackette is situated in George Street, Newtown.

Stevens has penned a number of popular tunes in the past including ‘Kaiso Terrorist’ and ‘Bad Boy King’.

He was crowned Senior National Calypso Monarch of St. Kitts and Nevis in 1996, 1999 and 2003. He had also held the title of Leeward Islands Calypso Monarch in 2004.
