BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – LESS than 24 hours after escaping from lawful custody, Guyanese national Ranel Carmichael was captured today (Feb. 9) in the Sandy Point area.

According to Police Press and Public Relations Officer Inspector Vaughan Henderson, Carmichael was captured in Farm Site, Sandy Point by members of the Security Forces.

Henderson explained that public-spirited citizens had seen the escaped convict sometime around 12:30 p.m. in Sandy Point, after recognising him from the wanted bulletin, and they immediately notified the police.

On behalf of the Police High Command, Henderson wishes to thank those members of the public for their assistance and noted that the relationship between the police and the general public has significantly improved in recent months.

Yesterday, at about 2:40 p.m. while working with fellow inmates in the compound of the Needsmust Power Station, Carmichael sought permission to go to the bathroom, from where he escaped.

Carmichael, who was residing in Rawlins Village, Nevis for some three years, was convicted at the Charlestown Magistrate’s Court on two separate counts of larceny on October 1, 2010 and January 1, 2011 respectively, and was sentenced to serve concurrent three-year terms on the two counts.

Inspector Henderson said he is now back at Her Majesty’s Prison and would soon be charged and taken before the court for escaping from lawful custody.
