BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – A Saddler’s Village resident is currently undergoing emergency surgery at the JNF Hospital after he was shot this morning (Feb. 10) while painting a building in St. Paul’s Village.

According to Police Press and Public Relations Officer Inspector Vaughan Henderson, police had responded to a report of shooting in St. Paul’s Village and investigations revealed that Travis ‘Chalice’ Matthew of Saddler’s Village was shot multiple times to the body by a masked assailant dressed in black.

Henderson said the incident took place around 10:30 a.m. while Matthew was atop a ladder painting a building in St. Paul’s Village. He also said that Matthew was transported to the hospital where he is undergoing medical treatment.

On arrival at the scene, SKNVibes learned that the area where Matthew was shot is an extension of Willette’s Housing Project, where a number of houses are currently under construction a short distance from the Caribbean Sea.

One of the construction workers at the site confirmed that Matthew was shot while painting the house.

“Chalice was painting that house over there, and suddenly a masked man in all over black appeared and fired some shot at him. Chalice fall to the ground and the gunman flee from the area. When we check on him, it look like if he had three bullet wounds. At least I see he had one to his head and another one to his chest,” the construction worker said.

Asked if they could not have prevented the incident from occurring and if anyone had recognised the assailant, the construction worker retorted, “Yoh mad, gunshot nah respect no nat! Dem gunman serious nowadays; but the fact is that it happen so fast nobody could do anything to prevent it. And the man had he face completely covered.”

This media house also visited the hospital where a number of Matthew’s relatives had gathered, including one named Nigel.

In his description of the wounded man, Nigel said, “I was shocked and surprised to learn that my cousin was shot. Chalice troubles no man…he is a peace-loving individual who is loved by all who know him in Saddlers. He shows respect to everybody and gets the same in return. From work is home. Most times when you see him walking in the village, it is with his two dogs. I don’t know why he was shot? Chalice doesn’t mix with criminals and he is not a member of any gang. I sincerely hope the police find the perpetrator.”

Inspector Henderson said that no suspect has so far been held but investigations are ongoing.
