BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - 10th February, 2010 - Over forty nominations have been received in LIME’s annual Make a Wish for the Elderly social outreach programme. A joint initiative with the Rotary Club of Liamuiga, the programme which started in 2005 honours the wishes made on behalf of senior citizens for Valentine’s Day.
“Our ‘Make a Wish for the Elderly’ programme is our way of demonstrating that we care for our senior citizens on a day when they are least likely to expect that kind of attention.
We could have easily concentrated our efforts on the “young and young at heart” but have found exceptional value in setting aside time to honour our senior customers,” said General Manager David Lake.
Members of the Rotary Club of Liamuiga working in teams will make delivery of packages in Basseterre, Tabernacle, Sandy Point, St. Paul’s and Challengers among other communities.
In Nevis LIME colleagues will coordinate the presentations making similar stops around the island to grant the wishes for the nominees.
Although the most requested item this year is food hampers, requests were also made for floral arrangements and fruit baskets as well as personal hygiene items. Over the life of the programme nominations have come from churches and church organisations, neighbours, friends and relatives of senior citizens.
In one submission the nominee wrote: “this lady is a spritely, spirited 92-year old. She spends her days travelling the community, Old Road to Lamberts, mainly by foot, visiting friends to 'cheer them up and 'give a good word' to the younger ones. She seems to be perennially in a good mood.
My wish is to visit her to express appreciation for the inspiration she brings to all who know her and love her - young and old- in the Federation.”
Corporate Communications Manager, Laverne Caines commenting on the programme said: “These are the stories that we believe give real meaning to this 6 year initiative. We can’t wait to see the expression of this nonagenarian when we turn up to bring her love and cheer for Valentine’s Day. It’s like returning the favour which she has been doing year round.”
LIME provides all of the gift packages for the recipients and together with the Rotary Club of Liamuiga coordinates the presentations.
