BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – A juvenile is among five individuals in police custody assisting with investigations into the break and enter of the Island Food Supermarket’s warehouse early this morning (Feb, 15).

According to Police Press and Public Relations Officer (PRO) Inspector Vaughan Henderson, at around 4:30 a.m. today, members of the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force and the St. Kitts-Nevis Defence Force responded to a call that a break-in was in progress at the warehouse of a Chinese supermarket on Prickly Pear Alley and Cayon Street.

“As a result of their immediate response, they managed to apprehend a male juvenile at the scene,” Henderson said, adding that the owner was alerted and he confirmed that the establishment was broken into and a large quantity of items were stolen.

“Security forces spun into action and mounted a search operation and managed to recover a large amount of the stolen items from the public bath at Upper Prickly Pear Alley, also from an abandon house and empty lot of land at Dorset Village,” the PRO said.

Henderson said the scene was processed by officers from the Crime Scene Department and a number of photographs were taken. He also said the stolen items were taken into custody and that five persons are assisting police with their investigations into the matter.

“We want to thank the general public for working with the police. It shows that they have a considerable amount of faith in us,” he said.

Owner of Island Food Supermarket Alex Lee said the thieves that broke into his warehouse were very “professional”.

“They are very professional. They took off the whole door, they took off the screws and I never see a thief like that. I was surprised when I saw it,” Lee told SKNVibes.

Lee, at the time of the interview, pointed out that he was unable to provide a figure of how many items were stolen, but said “it was a lot and I believe it started early in the morning”.

He said that the supermarket which faces Cayon Street has been in operation for about one year and indicated that the door was being repaired and had to be replaced before the day was over.
