    Basseterre, St. Kitts (August 02, 2006): One hundred and twenty-six children are learning the basics of fire and other safety procedures at a three-day workshop.

     

    The 6th Annual Fire Safety Workshop commenced to today at the Fire and Rescue Services Headquarters at Ponds Pasture. Courses are also running simultaneously at the Edgar T-Morris and Sandy Point primary schools as well as in Newcastle, Nevis. The workshop caters for children between the ages of five to twelve years.
     
    At the opening ceremony, Coordinator Natalie Fough said since the inception of the programme the incidence of fire reports and other accidents involving children are down, along with the number of prank calls to the emergency hotline. She attributed this success to the educational aspects of the programme.
     
    All activities are said to be very interactive. Water safety by the Coast Guard, road safety by the Traffic Department and rail safety
    Acting Fire Chief Hester Rawlins
    by the St. Kitts Scenic Railway, along with the traditional fire safety instructions will be reviewed.
     
    "Your role is a very important one," Acting Fire Chief Hester Rawlins told the participants at the fire station. "I urge you, when you leave here to share what you have learnt here with your parents, friends and schoolmates when school opens."
     
    Assistant Secretary in the Ministry of National Security Ivor Blake noted that the department considers this initiative to be a "worthwhile venture." He pledged continued support from the ministry for the programme and revealed that they were looking forward for more projects such as this from the emergency services.
     
    Indocom Ltd (of Trinidad), Cable and Wireless, Reeds Data Services, the Four Seasons Resort, T.D.C. and the Bank of Nevis were credited for their contributions. Appreciation was also expressed to
