Hemisphere Marks Inter-American Day of Women of the Americas

Starret Greene - OAS Representative in the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis
OAS Press Release

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - February 18, 2011, is commemorated as Inter-American Day of Women of the Americas, and the 34 member countries of the Organization of American States (OAS) are engaged in a series of events and activities to mark the occasion.

The Day of Women of the Americas was established in 1982 by Resolution CIM/Res.587 (X11-0/82) of the OAS General Assembly, to commemorate the creation of the Inter-American Commission of Women (CIM), in 1928.

The main objective of the day is to stimulate new initiatives and establish programs of action dedicated to fully and permanently involve women in the countries’ development.

OAS Representative in the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis Mr. Starret Greene said that the observation of the Inter-American Day of Women recognized the vital role that Women of the Americas have played as agents of social change. The OAS Representative said that his organization would continue to work with all stakeholders to bring about improvements in the status of women and to ensure their unimpeded involvement in every framework of our society. Mr. Greene also said that more women needed to be strategically placed in positions, both in the public and private sectors, to help secure and further advance the gains they have already achieved. “This is a mandate that my organization will continue to pursue with vigor and without wavering”, the OAS diplomat concluded.

The OAS, through its Inter-American Commission on Women (CIM), continues to collaborate with member countries and women’s organization in the Hemisphere to help design, develop and implement programs and projects that are specifically geared towards achieving greater equality, remove biases and prejudices against women, and eliminate all forms of discrimination as well.
