BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – FOURTEEN passengers and a driver narrowly escaped serious injuries on Saturday (Feb. 19) when the coaster in which they were travelling fell into a culvert.
SKNVibes learned that while the bus was travelling west along the Frigate Bay Road in the vicinity of the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank at approximately 12:10 p.m., a goat ran across the road and, in an attempt to avoid hitting it, the driver swerved and ran the vehicle into the culvert.
Sergeant Calvin Amory of the Police Traffic Department told this media house that the public service bus, GT 22, owned by Troy ‘Spuddy’ Hendrickson of the Caribbean Journey Masters, was travelling from Frigate to the International University of Health Sciences School of Medicine with 14 students from that institution when the accident occurred.
“The driver explained that while he was coming around the curve on the main road, a goat ran across the road on the southern side and he swerved, trying to avoid the animal. He ran off the road as the vehicle lost control and ended up in the drain on the southern side of the road,” Sergeant Amory said.
According to Amory, there were no serious injuries but two persons had complained of back pain and were taken to the hospital. The others were also taken to the hospital for observation.
Hendrickson explained that the windscreen of the bus was broken and its left side was “probably ripped up”.
In his advice to motorists, Sergeant Amory said, “We are aware that animals will be walking across the Frigate Bay area, and we’re asking persons to drive with due care and attention when using not just this road, but any road.”
