BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS, FEBRUARY 23RD 2011 (CUOPM) – St. Kitts and Nevis’ Prime Minister Hon. Dr. Denzil L. Douglas says the challenge of creating new and important opportunities for the people of the twin-island Federation will be first and foremost while holding the Chairmanship of the OECS Authority and the CARICOM Heads of Government Conference.

Dr. Douglas, who is currently the Chair of the OECS Authority and assumes the chairmanship of the Caribbean Community Heads of Government in July said both present special opportunities for leadership, collaboration and constructive action where this and other pressing issues, within this important organization, are concerned.

He said that apart from his regional vision and responsibilities, however, the primary focus and priority of his Government is to continue to provide lap top computers, scholarships, land and home ownership, concessions and exemptions for the young, the old, or the otherwise vulnerable, expanded and expanding acreage for farmers and training and equipment for the security forces.

“However these opportunities may be packaged or labeled, but at the end of the day, they all represent one thing – opportunities for more secure and stable lives for Kittitians and Nevisians,” said Prime Minister Douglas.

He said his government constantly looks at its prime assets – a bright, competent populace, intriguing history, attractive climate, striking topography, extensive experience in the areas of governance and economic development – and, then, with these assets in mind, “we pursue partnerships designed to redound to the benefit of Kittitians and Nevisians in the form of expanded job and entrepreneurial opportunities.”
