BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS, FEBRUARY 25TH 2011 (CUOPM) – Prime Minister Hon. Dr. Denzil L. Douglas is encouraging young people in St. Kitts and Nevis to read.
Dr. Douglas was one of several authors participating in the Charles A. Halbert Public Library’s “A GOOD READ” programme aimed at promoting reading as a pastime among the general public especially the youth.
The programme is in collaboration with the History and Heritage Society’s month-long activities under the theme, “Reading as a pastime” in February.
Local authors of literary works within the Federation of St.Kitts and Nevis were interviewed at the Charles H. Halbert Public Library.
Prime Minister Douglas shared his views on what inspired him to author “Coming of Age,” his favorite book and examined ways to encourage more people in the Federation to engage in reading as a pastime.
“Coming of Age,” is a celebration of visionary leadership of St. Kitts and Nevis Prime Minister Hon. Dr. Denzil L. Douglas and the enormous strides made by the twin-island Federation, says former CARICOM Secretary General, Sir Edwin Carrington.
“This collection of speeches, some 76 of the 800 he reportedly made in the 10 years, is in essence a chronicle of the political, social and economic history of St. Kitts and Nevis between 1995 and 2004. It provides glimpses of the major platforms that were launched by the government headed by Prime Minister Douglas during this period and identify benchmarks by which to measure the success of the various policies,” said Carrington at the launching.
