Drunken driver uses steps for roadway

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – AN early morning traffic accident had left members of the public amazed at the sight of a vehicle perched on the stairway of an apartment building that also houses Gillard’s Supermarket.

According to Inspector Cromwell Henry of the Police Traffic Department, investigations revealed that at about 2:00 a.m. on Friday (Feb. 25), motorcar PA 3277 driven by Kelvis Taylor of Ponds Extension was travelling westward along the FT Williams Highway when it ran through the round-about and collided with the building that houses Gillard’s Supermarket.

“The fence and one of the building’s windows were damaged. No personal injuries were sustained by the driver, but the car was badly damaged,” Henry said.

He also said that Taylor was subsequently arrested and charged for driving under the influence of alcohol with an expired driver’s licence and was expected to appear in court shortly.

"Speed kills the faster you drive. And should you be involved in an accident, the more severe will be the impact, and the chances of avoiding an accident is reduced if you are driving above the speed limit.

“We are asking you just to slow down, observe the speed limit, for should there be an accident the chances of you not being injured would be greater and also the chances of you avoiding the accident would be greater,” Henry said.

Inspector Henry has reiterated the call for drivers to exercise caution on the roadways, noting that speed is the major factor in accidents.

He explained that the national speed limit is 40 mph out of towns and villages and 20 mph within them.
