Areas of the Irish Town playfield where the sports was held

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts –STUDENTS of the Irish Town Primary School had to abandon segments of their much anticipated Sports Day due to a shooting incident that occurred sometime after 4:00 p.m. on Friday, February 25.

A source told this media house that while the day’s activity was in process at the Irish Town playfield, a young man was seen running across the field, chased by another who was firing shots at him. And, as a result and also in protection of the children’s safety, the day’s proceedings came to a premature end.

Police Press and Public Relations Officer, Inspector Vaughn Henderson confirmed that the shooting incident did occur. He also said officers had responded in a timely manner but no one was apprehended.

SKNVibes also contacted Elvis Charles, the Principal of Irish Town Primary School, who said later today (Feb. 28) they would be conducting the unfinished activities with regards to the Sports Day, because many children are still very much traumatized over Friday’s incident and they do not want to subject them to the same setting again.

He said while some of the students are aware of shooting incidents in the community, this has been the first time an incident of such nature has taken place during their Sports Day.

Charles said he was told by a teacher who saw the entire incident that a gunman came from the vicinity of Horsford’s Street, within the vicinity of the Clarence Fitzroy Bryant College Technical Division, and fired a number of shots at a group of young men who were seated atop the hill of the playfield.

He said the men ran and the gunman followed firing more shots, but retreated after he realised people were aware of what was happening.

The Principal said he heard about three shots but thought they were made by the gun used to start the races, until he saw the commotion.

Charles said he is angry about the entire ordeal because all of their hard work had gone to waste and they had to discard many things. He added that many students, whose enthusiasm were high, were also robbed of what they had been preparing themselves for.

The matter is being investigated by the police.
