CHARLESTOWN Nevis, March 4th 2011 - After months of preparation on their newly extended playfield at the St.Thomas’ Primary School, the students, Teachers and parents of that school were eagerly anticipating their sports meet on the newly laid grounds.
However, a heavy downpour yesterday morning, left the newly prepared grounds, damp and soggy. Sports Master Rohan Isles and Coach Eddy Caines had to make a quick decision –whether or not to postpone the meet.
A quick decision was made to move the sports to the Elquemedo Willet Park. After all, the grounds there was still freshly, marked from the Charlestown Primary School Sports, held just the day before.
Despite the short notice, the parents and relatives of the athletes reacted favourably and showed up in their numbers at Nevis’ premier sporting venue. The crowd swelled as the day progressed and the news spread. The school now had the added advantage of securing much needed gate receipts and the athletes stepped up to another level, fitting for the big stage for which they are preparing , come the grand mini Olympics.
No fewer than 9 records were broken on the day.—seven individual records and two team records—both by Sparrows.
Sports Master Rohan Isles extended his heartfelt gratitude to the staff at the school, the parents and the entire community for showing up and supporting the school in the way they did. According to Isles: “They are the reason why we had such an amazing event and the students showed up and performed remarkably”.
Among the spectators was Premier Joseph Parry who appeared to be thoroughly enjoying himself.
Isles also extended special thanks to the school’s platinum sponsor, the Four Seasons Resort Estates.
Green House came away the clear champions on the day and the general feeling is that the St.Thomas’ Primary school will be one team to watch-- come the grand inter primary event.
