BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS – A jubilant Monique Johnson was filled with smiles last night (Mar. 4) at the Carnival Village as her name was announced as the new 2011 Miss Basseterre High Talented Teen.

Johnson tallied 630 points and took the awards for four of the five judged segments while Kevina Buchanan, whose platform was Spiritual and Moral Development, amassed 593.5 points to take the first Runner-up spot.

The Second Runner-up position went to Ishelka Celestine with 547.5 points. Her platform was Health and Family Life and she was awarded the prize for Best Interview.

The other contestants were Miss Historical and Cultural Preservation – Kymera Francis, Miss Personal and Community Development – Naomi Finch and Miss Education and Recreation - Shanik Joshua, who was named Miss Amity and Miss Photogenic.

Johnson, in her winning Talent segment, dramatised a newspaper vendor while outlining some of the stories in the paper. She also spoke about the life people choose to live and the things on which some of them spend their money.

The large crowd seemed much enthused by her performance as she kept them laughing and cheering from beginning to end.

Additionally, she took Best Introductory Speech, Best Creative Wear and although she also won Best Formal Teen Wear in a hot pink dress, many were of the opinion that it should have been awarded to Buchanan, who wore an elaborate Cinderella dress dubbed ‘Peach Perfection’.

The pageant was held under the theme ‘Youth Prepared For Responsible Leadership’ and was a fundraising event for the school.

There were sideshow performances by a number of students as well as the ‘School Time Lover’ artiste Nicha B, the H20 Dancers, Footsy and Silk and the Grand Masters was the house band for the night.
