Buju to be sentenced in June

    BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - NOW that a Florida jury has rendered its guilty verdict against Jamaica reggae sensation Buju Banton, he will have to remain in remand until June 16, 2011 before knowing his faith at his sentencing hearing.

     

     

     

    Buju Banton was found guilty on February 22, 2011 for the December 2009 incident which took place in Miami, Florida.

     

     

     

    The jury entered three guilty verdicts for conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute five kilograms or more of a mixture and substance containing a detectable amount of cocaine, attempting to possess five kilograms or more of cocaine, and also for aiding and abetting others in using a communication facility in the commission of a felony. 

     

     

     

    They jury however found him not guilty on the fourth charge of attempting to possess five kilograms or more of cocaine.

     

     

     

    The singer went through two trials. The first one began in September 2010 but ended in a mistrial after the jurors were unable to decide on a verdict. He was therefore given a second trial date which began on February 14. 

     

     

     

    In a recent interview with reporters outside the Florida courtroom, Buju’s lawyer David Markus said he would file an appeal against the conviction and also try to get his client bailed pending a hearing.
