Nevis Youth Movie Competition

By: NIA, NIA Press Release

PMTU, CHARLESTOWN Nevis, (March 9, 2010) - Imagine it, then get it done.  The Project Management and Training Unit (PMTU), Ministry of Social Development, invites citizens of the island of Nevis, ages 11 to 19, to participate in its first cell phone Nevis Youth Movie Competition (NYMC).

The competition, which was officially launched on Thursday March 3, is organized with a view to offer a unique forum for emerging talent and helping to engage the minds of the youth.  It is designed to nurture the creativity and innovation of the young independent moviemakers on Nevis and to add to the tourism product of the island.

The NYMC has two categories; Secondary Schools and Sixth Form College.  It is based on the theme “Nevis Then and Now”.  Entries can be short feature, animation, drama and documentary.  This approach supports the “plan for the regional digital development strategy” with its overarching goal of transforming Caricom into a knowledge-based society through the use of ICTs.

While the closing date for submissions is April 29, 2011 at 3 pm, the judging process will be conducted during the Nevis Film Week, 8 – 15 May, 2011, when movie makers, producers, script writers and academics from across the globe will be on the island.

Students of the Secondary Schools category have an option to “create an advert up to but not exceeding 3 minutes.  The advert can either be for an existing known product or an imaginary brand, using audio-visual creation – mobile technology and innovative means of artistic expression.  On the other hand, Sixth Form College students have an option to “create a short movie, maximum length 10 minutes, using audio-visual creation – mobile technology”.  This short movie can be documentary, drama or animation and offers the audience an entertaining and interesting insight into their local community.

Entry forms along with terms and conditions can be collected from the Project Management and Training Unit, Cotton House Building, (opposite the Treasury Building), Charlestown; Ministry of Social Development Office, Administration Building, Main Street, Charlestown; Charlestown Secondary, Gingerland Secondary and Lyn Jeffers Schools.

The competition will be the centre stage of the 2011 film season on Nevis.  The week is a major celebration and leading competitive showcase for local, regional and international movie and moviemakers in the Caribbean Diaspora.  The Travelling Caribbean Film Showcase Forum will be held during that week.
