Press Release

CHARLESTOWN, Nevis, 14th March 2011 - Petal Parry of Nevis is now qualified as an affiliate of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants. Petal received the professional accounting qualification from the United Kingdom based Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA).

The ACCA is the world’s largest professional accountancy body. Petal completed the requirements for the ACCA in the June 2010 examinations.

Petal works at PricewaterhouseCoopers as a Senior Accountant. She said, “Working and studying is very difficult.  It was very hard at first handling the responsibilities at work and studying for exams but I was able to manage as a result of perseverance, hard work and a positive outlook. I also benefitted from the very strong support system provided by family, especially my father and my sister.
They provided so much moral support and I am very thankful. The firm provided study leave too which was a crucial factor in my actually handling working and studying.

“When I began the ACCA qualification there was no doubt in my mind that this was the qualification for me. Where I work at PwC audits are conducted in accordance with International Standards of Auditing and financial statements are prepared using the International Financial Reporting Standards Framework. The modules within the ACCA program are based on these standards therefore the ACCA program assisted me directly with my career path.”

Although Petal has a Bachelor of Science degree in Economics and Accounting she took a practical attitude to the need for another level of qualifications. “For me it was quite simple. Just as a lawyer goes to law school to become eligible to practise law, likewise in order to become a practising accountant one needs to obtain a professional qualification. There are some skills that can only come from professional training and practical experience.”

Petal received her training for the ACCA qualifications locally at the North Eastern Caribbean Accounting School (NECAS) at Greenlands, Basseterre. In making that decision she considered both cost and quality of tuition and has high praise for her tutors.

“Firstly studying locally is less costly than travelling to the United Kingdom. The school (NECAS) provides tuition that is very much needed for students in the ACCA program. Studying on your own can be very daunting and many times you need the appropriate direction and guidance when studying. Furthermore they are certified tuition providers of the ACCA programme. The tutors have a wealth of knowledge as they were practicing both internal and external auditors and are currently professors of Accounting. They know the accounting theory and can also aptly give you practical application. You really do feel that your success is their success.”

Ms Parry is no stranger to success for in addition to her first class honours undergraduate degree, while at Cave Hill Campus in the school year 2005 – 2006 she was awarded the U. W. I. Cave Hill Faculty Prize – Level I for attaining the highest Grade Point Average (GPA) in the faculty of Social Sciences and the U. W. I. Cross - Campus Faculty Prize – Level I for attaining the highest GPA in all faculties of the University.

The North Eastern Caribbean Accounting School is also proud of Petal’s success. The director Dr. Robertine Chaderton said, “Petal’s success has encouraged me to promote the school throughout the Eastern Caribbean.”

Petal is the daughter of the Honourable Joseph Parry, Premier of Nevis. Ms Parry is highly congratulated for her success in the field of accounting.
