Over the last several weeks, Cable & Wireless has alerted customers of its intention to close its TDMA network on August 15th, 2006. TDMA customers have been contacted via its TeleSales Department and were informed about the impending change. They have also been made several offers to convert their TDMA mobile to the newer GSM network.
In one of its weekly editions of Telecoms Talk, David Lake, VP Mobile and Consumer Sales said that the TDMA has served its usefulness over the last 6 years and the company would now like to see customers take full advantage of its GSM network. "There are so many benefits in using GSM that we do not anticipate any difficulty in being able to convert our TDMA customers to GSM."
According to the Cable & Wireless Executive, GSM provides over 90% coverage in St. Kitts and Nevis. The service also has several entertaining features that are not available on TDMA. He listed some of these as polyphonic ring tones, internet, picture messaging and other multimedia capabilities.
Customers are urged to continue to take advantage of the many offers to sign up to GSM if they have not already done so. Cable & Wireless also wishes to advise those customers with balances on their prepaid TDMA phones that the equivalent amount of credit would be transferred to their new GSM account.
At midnight tonight, Tuesday 15th August, the TDMA network would be switched off, and mobile service would be provided exclusively via GSM.
