CHARLESTOWN,Nevis, March 18, 2011 - The Nevis Humane Society/Friends of the Ark is happy to announce that we will be participating in the Annual Nevis Agriculture Fair on Thursday, March 24th and Friday, March 25th of 2011.
Our booth will be located next to the vets booth, Patricia Barlette-Powell VMD from 9:00am to 5:00 pm each day. It is located at the Charlestown playing field at the edge of town. We will have a number of very interesting events and information for adults and children concerning care for your cat or dog. There will also be lightweight Ark T-Shirts for sale for EC$ 40.00 along with bags of charcoal for EC$1.00 (with instructions if your animals is poisoned.)
Some of the events included are:
“Moxie” the Border Collie with her owner and handler Mary Ann Virant from 11:00am - 12:00 pm on Thursday. Moxie is trained for Pet Therapy and can do all sorts of tricks and demonstrates her beautiful training for all. Last year she did a very successful demonstration at the St. Thomas Primary School which was met with great enthusiasm by the children.
IT IS A GREAT CHANCE TO LEARN HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DOG TO WALK ON A LEAD WITH YOU. Great exercise for you and your dog! Just like people, all dogs need regular exercise!
The children can enjoy coloring their own animal masks from 1:00 pm until 3:00 p.m. on Thursday - Directed and aided by Marina Simmons. There will be a pet grooming display by Marchia Boon from Paw Prints from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Friday. We will need some dogs or cats as volunteers that are used to large crowds and music.
We will try to provide as much educational information as possible and answer any questions although we are not licensed vets. We will also have information on low cost ways to keep your animal healthy. For example, did you know you can sprinkle brewer’s yeast in your dog or cats food daily to ward off fleas? Sprinkle some rosemary under your animals bedding. Salt is great against fleas as many people know who take their dogs for a sea bath.
For example, one of our information leaflets is on Parvo, a disease that can kill unless your animal has been regularly vaccinated. Parvo is very common on the island and many people think their animal is dying from poisoning when in fact it is often caused by Parvo. Dogs and cats need to be vaccinated just like young children.
There will also be pictures from Care Nevis of dogs for adoption and contacts from Care and Ark for kittens for adoption. Before considering adopting, please remember they take time and money to receive good care. Be sure to read our poster on Golden Rules for Dog and Cat Care (see attached) which will be on display at our booth.
We continue to strongly promote Spay and Neuter (trim/cut). This is provided for free for low income families. Not only does it help stop the birth of unwanted animals but it also prevents some diseases. It keeps your pet from wandering and makes them a better guard dog. We hope you will join as a member or make a donation at our booth or mail to: PO Box 350 Charlestown, Nevis to support this important program.
An uncontrolled mating pair of cats can produce with their offspring 80 million cats in 10 years! One dog, her puppies and their off spring can produce 60,000 puppies in 6 years!
