Can Cayon Primary repeat last year’s performance?

By: Audwin Andrews, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – In 2010 Cayon Primary ran away with the Rams Primary Schools Track and Field Championships, but will they be able to repeat that performance this year?

Last year, the school dominated the championships to dethrone St. Paul’s Primary after capturing nine gold, six silver and five bronze medals.

“All the schools have indicated that they are ready for competition. Challenges have already been issued to the defending champions, Cayon Primary School. So the question is, ‘Can Cayon repeat?’ Because there are a number of schools in line to ensure that they do not.”

Those were the words of Sports Officer Craig Connor, who was at the time speaking with SKNVibes.

He also revealed that this year’s meet, scheduled for April 1-3, “will be a spectacular one”.

“We are going to see a few records broken…that’s for sure. I say this because there have been some outstanding performances during the various schools’ sports meet over the past several weeks. We are going to see more schools being competitive in winning the championship. I predict that there will be a repeat from last year where Cayon became champions after winning the last set of events. It’s going to be very close and I am looking forward to some very keen and competitive event,” the Sports Officer disclosed.

With regards to preparations for the highly anticipated three-day event that will be held at the Silver Jubilee Stadium, Connor explained that “preparations are progressing smoothly”.

“We have seen almost all the schools finishing all their Sports Day. A total of 21 schools, including private and government, will be competing this year,” he added.

Last year’s championships saw a strong showing of talent from nearly all of the 19 public and private learning institutions that participated. All but two of them earned at least one medal during the two-day of track and field meet.

Eight records were broken at the competition and many athletes demonstrated that great strides continue to be made in the grassroots’ development of track and field throughout St. Kitts and Nevis.

A call was also issued to parents and track and field fans to show support to the new generation of athletes.

“Everyone should come out and encourage these athletes as they display their talent on the track, because we have a lot of talent at the primary school level. I can guarantee that patrons will get their money’s worth,” Connor said.
