Lydia Claxton fund to be launched

Lydia Claxton
By: Curtis Morton, Press Release

CHARLESTOWN Nevis, March 21 2011 - Wednesday April 6th 2011 will see the launch of the Lydia Claxton Fundraising endeavour.  The former West Indies Netball captain in is currently in the fight for her life as she battles against Breast cancer.  She is currently undergoing treatment in the United States.

Cancer treatment is very expensive and her colleagues at the Ministry of Education have come forward to assist the hard working athlete.  The launch will significantly take place at the biggest sporting event known to Nevis on an annual basis: The InterPrimary Sports meet, dubbed ‘The mini Olympics”.

An announcement will be made during the course of the event as to when the collection of donations will be made.  Persons attending the event are kindly asked to bring along a significant contribution whether in cash or cheque.

Cheques can be made out to: ‘The Lydia Claxton Fund”.  Quite apart from donations made at the Inter Primary event, persons interested in making contributions can make such donations at the Nevis Cooperative Credit Union/Lydia Claxton Fund.

Quite apart from representing Nevis at Netball at the highest level as one of the best defensive players known to the Caribbean, Lydia followed in the footsteps of her brother Dean Thompson to become one of the finest female cricketers in Nevis. As Sports Coordinator within the Ministry of Education, she was responsible for coordinating sporting events and competitions within the Primary Schools.  These events included the always highly competitive Primary schools Football and Cricket competitions and the Inter Primary Sports meet.

The Nevis Island Government last year announced that one of the stands at the Grell Hull/Stevens Netball Complex will be named in her honour to add to her numerous accolades.

Over the weekend the Education Department on Nevis issued the following Press Release:

    “PRESS RELEASE FOR MEDIA HOUSES
