    Williams sets new Javelin record

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - THE 33rd edition of the TDC/Coca-Cola Inter-School Track and Field Championships got to an impressive start when Adrian Williams of  the Gingerland Secondary School broke the Javelin record for the Intermediate Category.

Williams in his first attempt threw 60.28m, surpassing the Inter-Schools’ record of 56.48m and also capturing the first gold medal of the championships for his school.

It was revealed to this media house by an SKNAAA official that Williams’ performance also surpassed that of the Senior Category.

As reported in an earlier article, Williams, who is also a member of the Gladiators Track Club, shattered the National Junior Javelin record with a mammoth first throw of 62.54m at the National Junior Championships/CARIFTA trials held at the Jubilee Stadium in Bird Rock on Monday, March 14, 2011.

His outstanding performance also qualified him for the IAAF World Youth Championship scheduled for France from July 6-10, 2011.

Meanwhile, one of Williams’ coaches, Winston Smith, who was on hand to witness his performance told SKNVibes that “he (Adrian) is one of a kind athlete and his performance at this age should help him to achieve more in this field of sports”.

In 2010 Williams captured gold at the CARIFTA Games in Cayman Island with a distance of 57.86m, and that was his first appearance at this level of competition.

Eleven high schools are competing at this year’s 33rd edition of the TDC/Coca-Cola Inter-School Championships, and the Charles E. Mills High School, formerly Sandy Point High School, are the defending champions.
