CHARLESTOWN Nevis, March 28th 2011 - The South Warriors team did not live up to their name as they offered no resistance to the power of the Pennyless All Stars team on Sunday, as the second division fixtures continued in the local second division league.
The defending champions batted first and were powered to all of 226 for 7 on the back of some serious hitting by opener Nigel ‘Taker’ Powell.
He slammed his way to 120 which included 5 sixes and 16 fours. So comprehensive was the batting display, that Stuart Williams and Carl Tucket sat it out in the pavilion as spectators.
When the South Warriors batted they did not offer a whimper of resistance as Nigel’s brother Livingstone, served to undermine their innings with an impressive five fer. They were skittled out for a mere 45 runs.
Former Nevis off spinner Rudy Browne picked up two wickets and may well be sending a message that he is ready for the Leeward Islands Masters’ tournament.
Meanwhile, up at the GRG, Brown Hill got the better of SDA Jets in an intriguing contest. On a pitch that played up and down, Brown Hill batted first, having left out record holder Harvey Stapleton out of their eleven and scored a competitive 187 all out in 29.3 overs. Hugo Grant top scored with a solid half century. Eddison Parris scored 35; Shaheed Tyson 22 and Bernette Thompson 20—18 of which came off Curtis Morton’s first over.
Curtis Morton later bounced back to scalp 3 for 40 from his eventual 6 overs.
Elroy Kelly got 2 for 29; Anthony Taylor 2 for 26 and Jaston Liburd 1 for 28.
When the Jets batted they got off to a rapid start but wickets fell steadily and already limited to nine men, it was always going to be an uphill task.
However, when Skipper Venrick Newton slammed veteran Austin ‘Jala’ Browne for 21 from one over, it seemed all over by the shouting for the Bronx men. Newton then holed out in the very next over and the writing was on the wall for the Jets men as they crashed to 157 for 8—effectively all out, 31 runs short of the target.
G.Liburd bagged 2 for 8; Hugo Grant 2 for 32; Shaheed Tyson 1 for 24; Tesson Stapleton 1 for 19 and Austin Browne 1 for 47.
