Coach Smith sees Adrian Williams as a future world champion athlete

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – THE name Adrian Williams has become synonymous with sports, more specifically track and field, and it has generated many positive discussions in the twin-island Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis.

He is just 15 years old and many pundits and sports enthusiasts are questioning the young man’s future because of his ability to compete at the highest level in any sports discipline.

One individual has already predicted that he “will be a world champion”.

Winston Smith, one of the Williams’ coaches, made that prediction during a recent interview with SKNVibes.

“Adrian is one of those all-rounders involved in sports.  He’s a great sprinter, a good football player and he’s also on the Nevis under-19 cricket team. With Adrian, you never know what’s going to happen when he’s competing. The beauty about this young man is that nothing fazes him. He is never nervous…if he were a boxer he would be deadly.

“I worked with him doing sprints recently, and each time he ran his time was faster than the previous one, and I’m thinking that my clock must be malfunctioning,” Smith said with a chuckle.

He described Williams as a good kid and hopes he follows the right path.

“This boy is so good at what he does, and I believe that the event will eventually claim him instead of him choosing which one is best for him to compete in the later stages in life. I would live to see him go further in whichever sport he chooses. But one cannot forget that education is important, because that is what helps athletes these days to advance their career.

“I would honestly love to see him get a scholarship and, believe me, I am making this prediction…we are looking at a future world champion in one of these sports event. But I don’t know which one,” the coach added.

Since the start of the new athletic season, Williams has been making headlines after breaking and setting new records. He convincingly earned his spot to compete in the upcoming CARIFTA Games slated for Jamaica over the Easter weekend (Apr. 23 – 25), when he easily surpassed the 53.44m standard to qualify for the Under-17 category.

Williams also shattered the National Junior record for the Javelin with a mammoth first throw of 62.54m at the National Junior Championships/CARIFTA trials held at the Jubilee Stadium, Bird Rock, St. Kitts on Monday, March 14, 2011.

At this year’s 33rd edition of the TDC/Coca-Cola Inter-School Track and Field Championships, the multi-talented athlete broke the Javelin record for the Intermediate Category in his first attempt. The new record now stands at 60.28m, surpassing the previous one of 56.48m.
