SKNIS Press Release

BASSETERRE St. Kitts, April 06, 2011 (SKNIS) - Senior Minister Hon Dr. Timothy Harris called on young persons at UWI  to “depend on their skills and ingenuity for survival and to lead rather than be lead.”

Senior Minister made the challenge while delivering the feature address at this years’ St Kitts-Nevis Students’ Association (SKNSA) Farewell Dinner and Awards Ceremony on Saturday April 2, held under the theme “Acknowledging the Present as the Gateway to the Future.” Minister Harris further advocated the need to strengthen democratic pillars and work for a more inclusive society as he encouraged students to seek a constructive future.

Newly elected President of the Association, Azard Gumbs revealed that 15 students are in the final year. Many of whom contributed significantly to the Association and served previously on its Executive. Certificates were distributed to the final year students and past members of the executive. Special awards were given to Mr. Elmo Burke and Mr. Devon Jones both for their contributions over the previous academic year.

Guest Speaker, Dr. the Hon. Timothy Harris, was presented with a crystal plaque as a token of appreciation for his very timely address to the students. Words of gratitude were also extended to him for allotting time to make the visit and inspire the Kittitian-Nevisian students at Cave Hill, Barbados.

Ms. Asha DeSuza, Master of Ceremonies for the evening, was recognized for her success at the Guild of Students 2011 elections. She now serves in the capacity of Social Sciences Representative 2011-2012.

Mr. Gumbs added that much “work, effort and time” went into making the evening the great success that it was. He stated: “I must commend the members of my Executive for the hard work they put in, and thank the members and friends of the Association who came out in their numbers to show their support.”  He specially commended Fitzroy Edinborough, immediate Past President of the Association and members of his executive for a term well served.

“As we continue to further our education here at Cave Hill and equip ourselves with the skills needed to meet the global challenges, it is my desire that our Association will continue to grow from strength to strength.” said Gumbs.

The dinner is an SKNSA tradition held annually as a means of thanking graduating members for their contributions to the Association.
