BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – MEMBERS of the Saddlers Village-based Save Our Youths At Risk (SOYAR) movement are once again showing love for their community with a recent donation to the Saddlers Primary School.

SOYAR members, on Friday (Apr. 1), presented an EC$1000 cheque to the Principal of the school, Marvah Bradshaw, in the presence of the learning institution’s staff and students.

During a short ceremony, devotion was held by the movement in which a prayer was delivered by SOYAR’s President Alicia ‘Diana’ Collins, who said the donation was made to assist in renovating the school’s kitchen so that Home Economics could be re-introduced.

“We were delighted and proud to be able to make the donation. Most of the members of SOYAR attended Saddlers Primary School when it was known as Saddlers All Age School and we were able to reminisce on the good times when we attended,” said Collins

Also during the devotion, Kira Mason, SOYAR’s Treasurer and a teacher at the school highlighted the topic of Thankfulness and led the students into a discussion.

The children were asked what the word meant to them and also what they were most thankful for.
Gizelle Rawlins, the SOYAR’s Vice President, handed over the check to Principal Bradshaw on behalf of the group.

Bradshaw said they were highly appreciative of the donation and that they are always looking forward to individuals giving back to the school.

“It was also more significant because they were all past students. Also, the fact that the money will go towards refurbishing the kitchen, shows that the members are also concerned about the health of the children,” Bradshaw said.

Collins said the group is in the process of organising various rap sessions with positive role models in society who would visit the school and speak to the students on various topics. She said they are hoping to start the first session sometime next week.

Additionally, the group is planning to organise a farmers’ cooperative and would be having a meeting with the Cooperative Department on Wednesday, April 14 at 9:30 a.m. at the Saddlers Primary School Hall. For this particular venture, the group is inviting persons between the ages of 17-35 who are seriously interested in farming to attend.

SOYAR is also hoping to organise a number of events geared towards helping youths throughout the year and giving back significantly to the community.

Collins said the group is pro-education and would like to introduce initiatives where persons in the community could learn various trades.

She believes that if members of different communities are united, it would result in the prevention of many social ills, “because unity is strength”.

“We have to encourage groups to be a part of positive initiatives for this year and moving forward. We’re also hoping to encourage adults to lend their support in every aspect,” Collins said.

Collins took the opportunity to extend her gratitude to the dedicated members of SOYAR and also to the community which had supported their efforts, as well as the school’s Principal and the local media.
