BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS, APRIL 8TH 2011 (CUOPM) – Fifth form students in St. Kitts will receive their personal Lap-tops at the start of the new school term. Nevis fifth formers began receiving theirs this week.

Phase One of St. Kitts and Nevis’ Prime Minister Hon. Dr. Denzil L. Douglas One-to-One Laptop Computer Initiative is for Fifth Formers, their teachers and administrators and is to be expanded with a Second Phase which will include  fourth and third formers of all high school students in St. Kitts and Nevis come September.

Recently Prime Minister Douglas said the One-to-One Lap Top Computer Initiative is not simply empowering the individual student but the entire household, community and nation.

“If every household in the community has a Laptop Computer, you are empowering an entire community and if our country is made up of communities, our country and nation is being empowered,” said Prime Minister Douglas as he triggered the process for Phase 2 of the One-to-One Laptop Computer Initiative during a visit to the National Information Technology Center at the C.A. Paul Southwell Industrial Park on Friday.

Dr. Douglas said the use of the Laptop computer that his St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Government is giving free to each high school student will not only be confined to the classroom.

“I think that Nevisian and Kittitian student is going to develop skills which would be critically important in advancing St. Kitts and Nevis technologically. That child will not only be developing those skills at home, but also the sister, the brother, the mother, the father, the entire family is going to be empowered,” said Prime Minister Douglas as he accepted a cheque from Resident Ambassador of the Republic of China on Taiwan, His Excellency Miguel Li-Jey Tsao.

He said the financial assistance of the Government and People of the Republic of China puts St. Kitts and Nevis on the path towards a technological revolution and it is only time that will show the enormous benefits that will accrue by your significant act of handing over this cheque.”

Prime Minister Douglas during his Cabinet’s annual Independence Visit to High Schools last September announced that teachers and administrators will also get Laptops during the first phase.

Last month St. Kitts and Nevis’ Minister of Youth Empowerment, Sports, Information Technology, Telecommunications and Posts, Hon. Glenn Phillip praised the Federation’s Prime Minister for fulfilling his promise to provide each student of the fifth form in St. Kitts and in Nevis with a laptop.

“In his foresight the Prime Minister did not just require that each student is provided with a laptop, but rather that each student receives a tool that could help shape them into productive citizens, innovative thinkers, problem solvers, a new breed of citizen, equipped to form part of a Knowledge Society,” Minister Phillip told the St. Kitts and Nevis National Assembly.
