100 Chairs donated to aid Green Valley Festival

Press Release

BASSETERRE St. Kitts, 11th April 2011 - The Green Valley Festival Committee recently received 100 lifetime chairs, to be used during the 15th anniversary celebration of the Green Valley Festival June 6 -13.

Committee Chairman Vernon Benjamin said in 2008 he was approached by a group of concerned villagers who wanted to do something to offset the cost the Committee incurs each year to finance the Festival.

"People have not the slightest clue about the staggering cost associated with the undertaking, but everything is done for a price - things like cleaning bathrooms, replacing toilet facilities, repairing and replacing fencing, building, lighting and decorating stage , providing dumpsters , renting chairs, cleaning up before and after each show, and cleaning up Cayon before, during and at the end of the Festival," Mr. Benjamin said.

"The group received permission from the Green Valley Committee to do a series of fund raisers. The fruit of their labor can be seen in the chairs that will be officially turned over to the committee at a later date."

Those chairs represent some $7,500 that the group raised. Benjamin said this testifies to the power of collective action and what can be achieved when concerned people get involved.

The Group is comprised of Valma Eddie, Dorette Warner, Rosalyn Archibald, Charles Pat Thomas and Vernon Benjamin, chairman. Kia Fraser and Joycelyn Stapleton joined the group later.

Group member Valma Eddie said "We welcome this opportunity to thank those persons from the Green Valley area who assisted us by contributing their time, money, and efforts to raise funds to purchase the chairs for use in this year's Green Valley Festival and beyond".

Several individuals were singled out for special recognition, including Lornett Paul, Amelia Isaac, Jane Michael, Lorna and Pamella Caesar, Corrine Mussington and Matalue Blackman. When asked about the activities for this year's festival, Benjamin said plans are going quite well. The Festival begins with an exhibition on June 6 and continuing on June 9 with a Banquet and the officially opening of the15th anniversary.

The Queens' Pageant and Junior Calypso Show will be held June 10. A Food fair with a difference will be held during the course on June 11, followed by the Senior Calypso Competition in the evening; On Sunday June 12, there will be a catamaran cruise followed by the International Night. The Festival will climax with Jouvert, a parade of troops and last lap on June 13.
