Eagle Boyz Club hosts week of activities in St. Peter’s

By: Suelika N. Creque, SKNVibes

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – IN its continued efforts to instill positive values in boys of the St. Peter’s community, the Eagle Boyz Club is hosting a week of activities under the theme ‘Empowering our boys to be responsible men’.

The first of these activities began yesterday (Apr. 11) at the St. Peter’s Community Centre with lectures being presented by a number of professionals from the Federation.

According to the club’s Public Relations Officer, Mary Nurse, some of the topics that would be discussed include Personal Hygiene, Communication Skills, Child Abuse, Crafts, Anger Management, Puberty and Oral Hygiene.

She said that Drs. Garfield Alexander was one of the presenters at yesterday’s activity and among those professionals who are scheduled to present and discuss various topics with the boys are Curtis Martin, Rev. Deslyn Watson, Marilyn Brown, Dr. Vance Gilbert, Dr. Michael Blake and police officers from Operation Future.

Apart from Nurse, founding club members Shauna Maynard and Anita Davis are also playing important roles in providing opportunities to make the boys responsible men.

Nurse said that the group would be visiting the Taiwanese Agro-processing Plant tomorrow (Apr. 13) and would be going on a historical tour on the following day.

“The group has been every effective. We have boys who have graduated from both high schools in Basseterre and are now in college. We had Dr. Terrence Drew who was a part of us and went back to study. We also have Pastor Cumberbatch who is a counselor for the group. So far, we had boys who were out there and getting out of hand that comes to us, and we try to do our best…it’s not easy but it’s worth it,” Nurse said.

Nurse said that the group was formed five years ago with seven boys and now has 75 members with 40 regular attendees.

“After the gangs started getting rampant in our area, we thought it was a call for us to get the boys together. There was already the Brownies for the girls, so we decided to have something for the boys,” she said.

The Eagle Boyz Club meets every Wednesday from 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. and it members participate in a number of activities including fun events with parents, visiting the elderly, sports and concerts.
