BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS, April 14, 2011(Customs PRO) - The Customs and Excise Department has concluded eight days of training for its officers in the area of Counter Narcotics Database creation, maintenance and analysis.
The training was conducted by Captain Walter Bass of the St. Kitts and Nevis Defence Force. Bass said that his module focused building profiles which are broad based, taking into account that seemingly unrelated aspects often hold missing information needed to fight the narcotics and other illicit trades.
In a brief closing ceremony held at the H. S. Hanley Training Room at Custom Headquarters, Bird Rock, on Wednesday (April 13) eleven Customs Officers along with two officers of the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force and three soldiers of the St. Kitts and Nevis Defence Force were awarded certificates for the successful completion of this workshop.
Comptroller of Customs, Mr. Rodney Harris highlighted that the joint training of officers in the three law enforcement arms of the government was testimony to the need for closer collaboration to combat crime and promote the overall safety of the people in the Federation.
"While Customs seeks to fulfil its role as the primary enforcer of the law at our borders, it is our desire to continue this collaboration with other enforcement agencies with the hope that it will bear the fruits which will assist in healing the ills that are down pressing our society," Comptroller Harris said.
On hand to distribute the certificates was Financial Secretary, Mrs. Janet Harris who praised the management of the Customs Department for initiating this "much needed" training that will further prepare officers to be effective in discharging their duties.
The Counter Narcotics Database Training Workshop was launched on Monday 4th April. This workshop brings to five the number of in-house training initiatives that the Customs and Excise Department has undertaken, to date, for 2011, the year when Customs Departments, the world over, observe the theme, "Knowledge, A catalyst for Customs excellence".
