BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – A young man is nursing a bullet wound in the JNF Hospital and his partner in crime is in police custody after a licenced firearm holder caught them in his bedroom.

Reports reaching SKNVibes state that a Conaree Village resident returned to his home yesterday afternoon (Apr. 13) and found the two young men in his bedroom with a bag containing a number of items belonging to him.

This media house learnt that when confronted, one of the men tried to attack the homeowner who is a licenced firearm holder. He drew his pistol and shot the thief in his leg, but he had compassion for the other one who, a villager said, begged not to be shot because he has four children.

According to the Police Press and Public Relations Officer, Inspector Vaughan Henderson, officers of the Criminal Investigation Department received a report Wednesday of a house breaking and larceny in the Conaree area.

“Police officers responded immediately and their investigations revealed that a Conaree resident had secured his premises at approximately 2:57 p.m. and left the home. He returned around 3:45 p.m. and discovered that his house was broken into, and when he entered to investigate further he met two young men in his bedroom.

“He enquired of them what they were doing in his house but got no answer. Instead, one of the young men approached and tried to remove something from his waist. As a result, the homeowner drew his licenced firearm and shot him in his right leg and restrained the other one,” Henderson said.

He said the two young men remained in the house under the watchful eyes of the owner until the police arrived on the scene.

“The injured intruder was taken to the JNF Hospital by a unit of the Emergency Medical Services and is warded in stable condition under police guard, while the other intruder was arrested on suspicion of house breaking and larceny and taken to the Basseterre Police Station, he added.

The Police PRO noted that a number of stolen items were recovered from a bag that of one of the intruders possessed and also from within the yard.

He also noted that formal charges are expected to follow “as soon as practicable and investigations are ongoing”.
