Black San’ Bang-a-Lang officially opens this weekend!!

SPIRIT Press Release

SANDY POINT, St. Kitts and Nevis (April 15, 2011) - After two successful weeks of pre-events, all eyes are set on this weekend’s official opening of Black San’ Bang-a-Lang, and organizers promise that hype and excitement surrounding the Sandy Point festival will only intensify.

This weekend, parent organization SPIRIT is set to roll out three massive events to officially open the festival and to maintain the palpable excitement from previous events. Friday (April 15) is the official opening of the festival, at 8:00 PM at Sandy Bank, and the air is already filled with high expectations as the inaugural event takes off.

The night will be an extraordinary cultural explosion with a lineup of young and upcoming artistes and premiere folklore troupes including Chagredandies Moko jumbie and the Bourkes Estate Mad Bull troupe will awaken Sandy Bank as the night offers a colorful and festive vibe. A special tribute will be presented to acknowledge previous Sandy Point festivals, which have set a legacy of excellence for Black San' Bang-a-Lang to be staged.

Crowds will also get a taste of the Samurai Warrior & Princesses and Capital Brimstone Hill parade day troupes which are set to take the streets of Sandy Point by storm in the upcoming weeks. The much-anticipated Service Charge J'ouvert troupe will also hit the stage in a show of what can be expected at the upcoming street jams! Come and register for one or more of the troupes and secure your package for one of the craziest street reveling sessions any local community festival has seen! Mixklusiv International and the revived and respected Lightz Out Band will pump up the volume in musical entertainment and will lead to the opening's climax of a spectacular firework presentation -- a preview of the explosive events to come!

Saturday’s (April 16) event is one for every family, for the entire community:
it’s the first ever TDC Family Affair Carnival at the Old Sandy Point Recreation Grounds! This is Black San’s treat to families and will pull together a large number of traditional and unique games in one place for all to enjoy. Patrons can expect tents of games, food-eating competitions and even fortune-telling! And, if a mud pit with mud games doesn't immediately excite you, you can try your luck with slippery balloons, a donkey race or the water-dunk tank! You have to be there to experience it all!

Games begin at 11:00am and entrance to the event is free if persons are dressed in wacky fashion, come with a donkey, or with a bucket-cover cart. All other persons will pay EC$3 to enter the grounds.

The weekend climaxes on Sunday (April 17) with the staging of the Carib King a De San Calypso Bacchanal, bringing over 10 seasoned and upcoming calypsonians to face off with two of their best pieces. In the line-up are Ayatola, I-Soursop, Queen Angie, Queen Anastasia, Queen Kibbie, Lala, Unexpected, Quantash, Zarky, Mighty Forest, Jack Spanner, Little Willy, Lord Black, Abu Lively and Mighty Blazer. In a different twist, judges will give their reviews of the singers after each performance as the crowd cheers on their most talented calypsonian. The singers will be backed by the legendary Grand Masters Band. This event will be held on the lawn overlooking Alley Bay, opposite Daniel's Trading Centre and will begin at 7:30pm.
