SPIRIT’s Black San J’Ouvert ‘Sell Off’

By: Jenise Ferlance, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – SOUNDS of the sweetest band in the land reverberated through the buildings in Sandy Point this morning (Apr. 25), as hundreds of revellers flocked the streets in carnival style to celebrate SPIRIT’s J’Ouvert Jam.

The much-anticipated event saw revellers lining the streets to ‘jump up' and ‘get on bad’ to the familiar tunes of the sweet Small Axe Band.

The main troupe at the community festival was Service Charge and it was complemented by many individuals in character outfits. Some concealed their identity with Halloween masks and a number of others were seen in ‘rubber mountain boots’.

One individual, who stood out in the crowd, had donned a blue doctor’s uniform along with a stethoscope and a blood pressure monitor.

Speaking with SPIRIT’s Public Relations Officer Judy Duponte, she told SKNVibes that even though the J’Ouvert started late it was still a success. She explained that due to a previous event, the band was not able to make it on time but revellers were not left bored as the Kollision Band was ‘Pon de Edge’ to entertain them.

“We are very pleased with the turnout at the J’Ouvert and the success of the troupe even though we started late. But persons were entertained by the Kollision Band until we were able to get the session started,” Duponte said.

A few scuffles took place throughout the street jam but members of the Security Force were on the scene to keep the peace and no injuries were sustained.

Duponte said she was very pleased with the way the Security Force’s members handled those matters and commended them for their hard work.

“Even with the few scuffles here and there, the J’Ouvert was still a success and I must commend the Security Force for doing such a wonderful job,” Duponte said.

The Carib Brewery-sponsored J’Ouvert kicked off at the Pon De Edge Bar sometime after 8:00 a.m. and persons ‘jammed’ on the Island Main Road down to Sandy Bank, Sandy Point Hard Court, where the band came to a halt and entertained revellers until 11:00 a.m.

The action continues this afternoon with the TDC Black San Parade starting at the new playfield in Sandy Point and ending at the old playfield with a ‘Sun Down Cook Out’, where persons would be able to unwind as SPIRIT brings its first Black San Bang-A-Lang to an end.
