    Charlestown Nevis (March 30, 2004) -- The 10th anniversary Agricultural Open Day held for two days last Thursday and Friday at the Villa, Charlestown Secondary School, has been hailed as a major success.

     

    Minister of Agriculture, Tourism and Culture, Telecommunications and Information, Lands, Housing, Cooperatives and Fisheries, the Hon Mr Malcolm Guishard, told GIS on Monday: “I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate the Ministry of Agriculture and the Department of Agriculture for the agricultural exhibition, which we witnessed last week.”

     

    The minister who did not attend the event that was held over a period of two days for the first time, as he was away in St. Kitts, deputising for Premier, the Hon Mr Vance Amory, at the 15th Inter-Sessional Meeting of the Conference of Heads of Government of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) that was held on the two days the agricultural exhibition was held.

     

      “I must say that it was a very commendable effort and it has drawn high praises from throughout the lengths and breath of this country,” observed Mr Guishard. “Those persons who visited it have said that it was one of the best they have witnessed on Nevis.”

     

    He offered words of encouragement to the Junior Minister for Agriculture, the Hon Mr Livingston Herbert, who delivered the keynote address during the opening ceremony, and to the Director Mr Samuel Powell, along with their staff. “I would to say to them, keep up the good work,” remarked Minister Guishard. “Their efforts will not go in vain.”

     

    Hundreds of Nevisians from all walks of life visited the exhibition, which was held under the patronage of a former Director of Agriculture in the Nevis Island Administration, Mr Augustine Merchant, who is the Federation’s representative for the Inter-American Institute for Co-operation on Agriculture (IICA), and was also addressed by Premier, the Hon Mr Vance Amory.
