BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – PUMP BAY, Sandy Point was the place to be on Sunday night (Apr. 24) as five contestants competed in the inaugural G-squared Miss Black San Swimsuit Pageant, which saw a delightful Roselyn Berkeley walking away with the crown.

Berkeley, who is an experienced model and recently became a mother, amassed 738 points to take the crown and the awards for two of the seven segments.

She won the Best Body Paint Swimsuit segment dressed in a delightful piece dubbed ‘Market Woman’ which was designed with airbrushed fruits and vegetables spray-painted all over her body, complemented by a big straw hat with fruits on top.

She also won the Best Interview segment in which she intelligently answered her question with a high degree of confidence.

Eusha Johnson took the First Runner-up position with 715.5 points and also the awards for all the other segments - Best Carib Black Swimsuit, Best Vintage Swimsuit, Best Creative Wear Swimsuit and Best I Rep SKN Swimsuit.

The Second Runner-up, Zia Warner, amassed 694 points and the other contestants were Teriza Ross and Stavena Lewis.

The inaugural event saw a large turnout and, according to one the organisers, they were very impressed with the quality of the show as all the contestants gave of their best. She assured the patrons that next year they would try to make the pageant an even better one.

Speaking with Berkeley shortly after her success, she told SKNVibes that she felt wonderful winning the title, especially the fact that it was the first ever Swimsuit Pageant held by Black San.

She however declared that preparing for the show was hard work.

“I recently had a baby, who is like eight months now, and everywhere I went I had to do it with her and it was really, really hard,” she said.

SKNVibes also spoke to her chaperon, Dwayne Weekes, who said Berkeley’s win was well deserved although he would have loved it if she had taken the other segments as well, which  he noted she had lost by a mere point.

Weekes said that he and Berkeley had worked hard on her preparation for the pageant and he was very pleased with and proud of her performance.

As part of her prize package for winning the competition, Berkeley will head to Anguilla in June to compete in the 2011 Miss Venus Swimsuit Pageant.

The night also saw sideshow performances by S.M.I, Rolhensha, EZB and C-Money, who entertained the crowd while the ladies prepared for the various segments.

Patrons were also entertained by the Small Axe Band.

The G-squared Miss Black San Swimsuit Pageant was one of the Black San Bang-A-Lang community festival’s events; the brainchild of the Sandy Pointers Inspiring Real Improvement Throughout (SPIRIT).

The festival, which began on April 1, ended yesterday (Apr. 25) with the Parade of Troupes through the streets of Sandy Point.
