LITTLE BAY, Montserrat, May 3rd 2011 - Montserrat now has three new black belt students in Taekwondo, a martial art, which is a technique for unarmed combat and self defence.
Twenty nine (29) students took the exam on Labour Day at the Montserrat Cultural Centre. Officiating the exam was Grand Master Huyn ok Shin, who is based in New York and oversees taekwondo schools on four islands in the Caribbean.
Shin said the students all did very well overall and on presenting each their new belt he also offered suggestions on the areas of their technique which need to be improved before they are next tested in December.
Family and friends, including the His Excellency the Governor Adrian Davis attended the Monday morning examination. Receiving his second degree black belt was Parliamentary Secretary Hon. Jermaine Wade. Other successful candidates were Shiloh Sweeney, Gordon Lynch and Joseph Cassell, who all graduated from brown to black belt.
Local instructor John Lynch congratulated the students on their hard work and encouraged them to keep practicing. Lynch recently opened a second branch of the school at the Look Out Community Centre.
