BASSETERRE, St. Kitts, May 3rd, 2011 (SKNIS) - Successes of the Ministry of Education were highlighted by Minister responsible for that sector Hon. Nigel Carty in an attempt to showcase the proactive approach being employed by key personnel.
During an Education Week address to the Nation on Monday the development and progress of the Technical and Vocational Education and Training Programme (TVET) which is being recognized for its support of the growth of the business and industrial sectors and its creation of employment for young people.
Minister Carty explained that inspite of the numerous achievements of this programme, every effort should be made to maximize output and bring about objectives, which was previously not being realized due to the lack of overall coherent and well-funded TVET strategy.
He announced the recent submission of a National Technical and Vocational Education and Training Road Map that charts the way forward to guide the development of the programme in secondary schools and TVET institutions which include the Technical Division of the Clarence Fitzroy Bryant College (CFBC), The Advanced Vocational and Education Centre (AVEC), and the National Skills Training Programme (NSTP) as well as the Youth Empowerment Though Skills (YES) Programme.
Another achievement noted by the Minister was the establishment of a Career Path for Teachers- a framework for upward and lateral mobility within the teaching profession. The minister expressed the realization that the proposed career path would require further input from a wide cross section of individuals and organizations to achieve support and balance.
“we are committed to making the teaching profession more attractive and better respected to attract and maintain the brightest and the best into this noble profession,” Minister Carty Stressed.
He highlighted other recent achievements including: Integrating Information and Communication Technology in the delivery of education, improvement in the Federation’s Learning Support Programmes, School Libraries and Resource Canters, Early Childhood Development and Special Needs Education.
The Minister saluted the proud record of achievement and leadership in the education sector and promised to sustain and build on this attainment by providing future opportunities in spite of many challenges confronting education providers throughout the globe.
