Sydney Earl Morris
By: Dr The Rt. Hon. Sir Kennedy A. Simmonds, Press Release

BASSETERRE St. Kitts, May 6th 2011 - I have been deeply saddened by the passing of my friend and colleague Sidney Morris.  He

battled illness for a long time with strength and fortitude, and overcame adversity to render outstanding and stalwart service to the people of St.Kitts and Nevis.  He was a dedicated educator par excellence, serving as teacher, administrator, Minister of Education and Deputy Prime Minister.

He was an effective and well-respected teacher in St.Kitts and Nevis and Bermuda, and when he returned to St.Kitts in 1980 to offer himself for public office, the people of Bermuda were sorry to see him leave.

As Minister of Education, he developed a close relationship with teachers and drew upon their wisdom and experience.  This collaborative relationship combined with his own passion for the development of our youth inspired him to promote policies and programs which catapulted St. Kitts and Nevis into a leadership position in education in the Caribbean, in the decade of the 80’s and extending into the 90’s.

He was highly respected throughout the Caribbean as an insightful and progressive Minister of Education.  The quality of his service, as an educator, to the youth of this Country is second to none.

I visited him at the Hospital on Friday 29th April.  He was as clear and lucid as ever and just as concerned about the future of our Country.

With his passing, St.Kitts and Nevis has lost a committed, dedicated and loyal public servant.

It is his family, however, who will feel his loss most deeply.

Lady Simmonds joins with me in extending deepest condolences to the family of our departed friend and colleague Sidney Earle Morris.

May his soul rest in peace.
