ROADTOWN Tortola, BVI, May 6th 2011 - Disappointment was drawn across the faces of thousands of revellers who had flocked the streets to enjoy the annual carnival event, which was marred by several fights, a stabbing and robbery.

VINO understands that this is the second time in two years that the J’ouvert had to end abruptly due to violence and despite a strong presence of police officers who were seen on active duty throughout the activity.

The stabbed victim was treated at the Schneider Regional Medical Center and his wounds are not believed to be life-threatening.

Meanwhile, the teenager who was involved in the stabbing was also arrested and charged for first-degree robbery. He reportedly stole a gold chain from another teenager at gunpoint.

However, prior to the premature end, roving photographer Andre “Shadow” Dawson was able to capture the spectacular J’ouvert action where the thousands of partygoers jammed onto the streets, swinging, wining, jumping, waving and enjoying the J’ouvert, St. Thomas style.

    Cultural Fair reaps success

Many gathered around Emancipation Garden to enjoy the annual cultural fair where a wide array of local food was on sale.

From whelks, fish and callaloo to tarts and freshly made juices, many indulged in the delicacies that were on sale.

However, the cultural fair was not only about food and several arts and craft, beauty products, and local jewellery were also on display and sale.

Several awards were also handed out at the fair’s award ceremony to vendors for their participation in respective categories.

Once again, photographer Dawson was on site to capture some of the scenes from the cultural fair.

The festivities in the USVI continue today Friday May 6, with the Carnival Races at the Clinton E. Phipps Race Track where eight horses from Tortola will be participating and looking to register victories.

VINO will be the first to bring you results from the races.
