BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – ESCAPED prisoner, Kyam Omari Veira, this morning (May 6) walked into the Basseterre Police Station and surrendered to the law enforcement officers.

“At approximately 9:30 a.m. on Friday, May 6, 2011, a family member of recently-escaped prisoner Kyam Omari Veira of Godwin Ghaut surrendered him to police at the Basseterre Police Station,” read a press release sent by Press and Public Relations Officer Inspector Vaughan Henderson.

The 23-year-old Veira, who was arrested and charged on Monday (May 3) along with Narbo ‘Bongo’ Challenger (30) and Bradley ‘Boone’ Marsham (23) with the murder of Shervin Williams of Godwin Estate, had escaped at 6:55 p.m. on the same day while in custody at the Sandy Point Police Station.

Henderson said Veira is likely to face charges of escaping lawful custody and that investigations into the matter are ongoing.

On Monday, April 25, 2011, the lifeless body of Williams was discovered lying on a dirt road in the vicinity of Godwin Ghaut Bridge.

According to Henderson, at approximately 8:35 a.m. on that day, officers received a report of a homicide in Godwin Ghaut and officers from the Old Road and Sandy Point Police Stations as well as the District ‘B’ Crime Response Unit immediately responded to the report.

“Enquiries revealed that Shervin Williams of Godwin Ghaut, formally of Middle Island, was found lying on his left side on a dirt road in a remote area above the railway in the vicinity of Godwin Ghaut Bridge.

“According to investigations, Williams had obvious injuries to the neck and head that appeared to be caused by gunshot. The District Medical Officer visited the scene and pronounced him dead. The Coroner was informed and gave permission for the body to be removed to a funeral home under police escort,” Henderson said.

He noted that the scene was processed by officers of the Crime Scene Department, who collected a number of items of evidential value and took them into custody for further analysis.

Williams’ death brings to eight the number of homicides recorded in the twin-island Federation for the year - seven on St. Kitts and one on Nevis.
