BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – A mother of three, Orelma Prentice, received one of the best Mother’s Day gifts last night (May. 7) as she took the first ever Miss Mother’s Day title with 1 956 points.

Prentice was also awarded Best Talent with a drama presentation depicting a real life experience in which she lost her children’s father to the hands of a gunman.

She also won the awards for Miss Photogenic; Best Swimsuit, wearing a white one-piece; and Best Evening Wear, sporting a hot pink dress; while leaving the only other judged segment, Business Wear, which was awarded to the First Runner-up and Miss Amity Ellia Jeffers, the oldest of the contestants, who amassed 1 797 points.

Taking the Second Runner-up position was Vincia Connor who accumulated 1 704 points while Shamella Ephraim scored 1 633 points and copped the Third Runner-up position.

The 24-year old queen also tied with Joleen Mason for the Most Popular Contestant award, which was judged from the audience’s reaction.

The other contestants were Ijahnya Carty and Rosetta Jarvis. The eighth contestant, Camille Romney, did not appear for some unknown reason.

The show started one hour late but saw an impressive turnout despite the inclement weather. And during the sideshow acts patrons were treated to some magical tricks, a Michael Jackson dance performance by Rally and songs rendered by Minister LK.

Prentice, who declared that it was her first pageant, told SKNVibes that she felt “great” after being adjudged the winner. She said she is proud to be the mother of two beautiful girls and one handsome boy, and that all the hard work and preparations paid off.

Thirty-nine-year-old Jeffers, who created quite a buzz surrounding this pageant, said she felt overwhelmed and delighted with her placement, because she did her best.

The mastermind behind the idea of the pageant, Michael Walters, said he believes it was a great show but there is room for improvement.

“Next year, we might do some things a bit different in terms of the age group, but I was happy to see so many people came out despite the weather,” he noted.

The show ended a few minutes before 2:30 a.m. and most of the patrons had seemed pleased with the judge’s decisions for the various segments and positions.
